Leonard Diamond Ph. D., who had been a longtime resident of Camarillo, died December 14, 2008 in Carlsbad, California.

Len was born on June 12, 1937 in New York City where he grew up. He graduated from the Bronx High School of Science in 1954, and from Hobart College in 1958. He received his PhD in psychology from Catholic University of America in 1966. Len moved to Camarillo with his wife and daughter in 1966 to work as a psychologist at Camarillo State Hospital. Pete Nava

Peter Estrada Nava
1935 - 2009
It is with great sadness and broken hearts that we announce the passing of our loving father, husband, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, Peter Estrada Nava. Peter was born in Oxnard, CA on December 6, 1935 from the union of Santiago Nava and Maria Nava and raised by his grandfather Telesforo Nava and grandmother Antonia Nava. Daddy passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Sunday April 19, 2009 after his courageous battle with Thyroid cancer.

Daddy's passion was music and animals. One of his favorite past times was getting together with his brother-in-law Alfred Carmona and cousin Joe Nava to play guitar and sing. He also played with the Estrada Brothers band for many years, which was a big part of his life.

Daddy was called into the U.S Army in November of 1956 where he trained as a U.S Army Combat Medic and later assigned to the MASH unit. When he returned he went straight back to his music career. He later began a long career of 22 years at Camarillo State Hospital as a Psychiatric Technician and then later decided to change careers into the law enforcement where he became a State Hospital Police Officer for 18 years and retired then in 1996, but he couldn't leave his passion so went back a month later and remained there until the State Hospital closed. Daddy always said his best years were spent at the hospital where he gained friends that he considered his extended family that remained close throughout his life.

Peter is survived by 2 loving sisters, Annie Carmona (husband Alfred Carmona) and Margret and her husband. Also 2 daughters who loved him more than words can express, "mousey" Rosalie Nava and "garbanzo bean" Debra Nava, daddy always gave silly nicknames. Also his wife Connie Nava of more than 50 years. His loving and devoted grandchildren Wendy(husband Nigel), Jason, Jessica and Brianna, and his great-grandchildren that he loved more than life itself, Annabelle, Brenden, and Gage. Also his companion, best friend, and loving partner, Mary Catherine Hosford of more than 20 years, along with her children Lori, Shawn, Brian, and Rhonda Robinson.

Daddy and Mary spent their remaining years in Porterville, CA where they both continued their careers, when they later retired in 2003. They then continued to devote their lives to their animals, which were like their children and accepted any stray on the street that needed a home or food. They always kept their home open to family and neighborhood children to use the pool on hot summer days. Everyone knew him to be the animal lover of the block. Daddy lived a wonderful and successful life with love and such a great sense of humor. Life was more beautiful thanks to God giving us the gift of Peter Estrada Nava. He will be truly missed by his family and friends. Sweet Dreams Grandpa.

Edward T. Ray
1936 - 2009
Longtime Camarillo resident Edward T. Ray died March 11, 2009, after a long illness. He was 72.

He and Elizabeth had two daughters, Linda and Katrina. Ed and Elizabeth divorced in 1986.

In the years since his retirement, Dr. Ray worked as fundraiser for the United Way, as a court-appointed special advocate, and as a member of Camarillo's Citizen Patrol, working with the Camarillo Police Department. He married Joanne Klein of Camarillo in 1993; they divorced in 2005. Ed and Jo travelled extensively through Europe and Africa, nourishing his deep appreciation of other places, and other cultures.

Ed had an amazing zest for life. His humor, dry wit, and generous spirit will be missed.

Norman Gould

On December 21, 2007 Norman Gould passed away due to complications of cancer at his home in Henderson Nevada. His wife Sue was with him when he died as she had been for 36 years. Norman retired from State service after many years of State service as a Program Director at Atascadero State Hospital.

Norman's story at the State and at Camarillo in particular is a unique one. He first entered CSH not as an employee or student, but as a patient. In the 1970s Camarillo housed a successful inpatient chemical dependency unit called 'The Family'. Norman was a patient on that unit in the early 70s and successfully completed treatment there. Afterward he wamted to become a mental health practitioner and entered the Psychiatric Technician Program at Cam and became a Licensed Psych Tech. He then decided to become an RN and entered the RN Program at Ventura College. In his RN class was his friend Willie Stephens. They successfully completed the RN program and by the mid-1970s were both working the PM shift on Unit 78 in Program 3A. Both Norman and Wille became Registered Nurses and would continue to work in Program 3A for some time. As the Hospital changed and units were shuffled about unit 78 became first unit 82 then settled on Unit 31 where it would remain until the closure of the Hospital. Norman became the Unit Supervisor of Unit 31 in the early 1980s then became a supervisor at CU and in the Adolescent Program. After Camarillo closed he finished his career at Atascadero and retired as a Program Director.

It is unlikely that any other former patient ever rose to such a high level of responsibility at Camarillo or any of the California State Hospitals. Perhaps it was his experience as a former patient that kept him always in the mindset of ethical patient treatment being the formost responsibilty of the staff. Norman always advocated for both his staff and his patients in a calm quiet voice, but meant what he said and followed through on his commitments. He was also a great teacher and many employees benefitted immensly from his knowledge, experience and, his humor.

Norman had many friends throughout his life but none were closer than his wife, Sue, and his friend Willie, who had remained Norman's best friend through all the years since they endured the RN program more than 3 decades ago. To Willie's three children he was 'Uncle Normy' and in fact, as Willie has said, he and Norman were more like brothers than friends.

Norman is survived by Sue, Willie, and by so many of us to whom he meant so much over so many years.

No memorial service is planned at this time.

Lauri Darlene (Woodill) Leach

1958 - 2008

Lauri Darlene Leach of Oxnard passed away unexpectedly surrounded by family, on July 13, 2008, in Michigan while vacationing.

Lauri found her calling while attending Buena High School through the High School Without Walls program. She spent numerous hours working at Camarillo State Hospital with mentally disabled patients and knew this was what she was meant to do. She was thrilled when accepted into the Psych Tech program, becoming certified in 1979 and moving on to work at Camarillo State and Atascadero hospitals. She spent the last ten years working at the Hillmont Psychiatric Center in the Ventura County Behavioral Health Department.

On July 23, 1988, Lauri married the man of her dreams, Craig Allen Leach. They built a beautiful life together in their home in Oxnard. Craig and Lauri spent a great deal of time traveling, working on their home, and spending time with family and friends.

She loved anything related to good luck – four-leaf clovers, pennies, etc. She was an avid reader of novels and would swap her books with her sisters on a regular basis.

One of Lauri's biggest loves was attending Bruce Springsteen concerts, primarily with her beloved sister, Cynthia. The two would travel all over the United States, often at a moment's notice! She would see Bruce concerts at fantastic locations such as Ireland, Amsterdam, Germany, and Paris with Cynthia and her other two sisters, Sherry and Pamela.

Lauri was a beloved wife, loving sister, and caring aunt to many nieces and nephews. Her inquisitive, loving and compassionate personality gave her the unique ability to befriend all that came in contact with her. Although we've lost our Lauri on earth a new star has appeared in the heavens.

Through one of William’s children, she was blessed to have a beloved granddaughter, Leanna, who was her pride and joy until her death.
